Welcome to the Experiential Environments project. This capstone project is from a Special Topics in European History course (HST 452) at Michigan State University that focused on Byzantine Landscape and Environment in Spring 2020.

Byzantium, a name given to the vast and diverse Eastern Roman empire between the fourth and fifteenth centuries of the Common Era in the Mediterranean and Anatolia, is often thought to be far removed from common knowledge today. However, because this empire was long lasting and geographically and ethnically diverse, Byzantium maintains a vibrant presence in legal history, visual culture, and popular media. In Byzantine history, embodied knowledge is the result of experiencing the past through multiple senses for experiential learning, rather than simply relying on historical texts. In this project, students visualized historical places in 3D in order to better understand Byzantium through first-hand exploration of historical sources.
